Route optimisation: plan the best route for every load

Every shipment in worxTMS has a Route page with built-in route optimisation. With one click worxTMS puts your pickups and deliveries in the best order, starts from your depot or the driver's live location, brings the truck back home, and can avoid tolls or use current traffic. The route then sets the distance, the price and the stop numbers your driver sees. Fewer kilometres, less fuel, better margins, on every load.

Before you start

  • A shipment with stops: create it on the Create page and click Next. The Route page opens by itself. You can also open it later from Edit Shipment.
  • Your depot address: set on Settings > Settings. The Depot start point uses it.
  • Driver tracking (optional): needed only if you want to start from the Driver's Current Location

The route options at a glance

Below the Pickups, Route and map boxes you will find the route optimisation settings:
worxTMS route optimisation settings: Optimize Pickups, Optimize Deliveries, Route Strategy, Start Point, Round Trip and Road Preferences

Step by step

1

Choose where the route starts

Under Start Point, pick one:
  • Depot: the truck leaves from your base. Best for most daily loads.
  • Driver's Current Location: the route starts where the driver is right now. Handy when a driver is already out and you add a load on the go.
  • First Pickup: the route starts at the first collection, with no empty leg from base counted
2

Pick the Route Strategy

  • Closest to Furthest: do the nearest stops first and work outwards
  • Furthest to Closest: drive out to the furthest stop first and work back towards home
Tip: with Round Trip ticked, both strategies make a loop that ends back at the start, so the truck does not drive the same road out and back.
3

Set Round Trip and Road Preferences

  • Round Trip: ticked by default. The route returns to the starting point after the last stop, and that return leg is included in the distance and the price.
  • Avoid Tolls: keeps the route off toll roads where possible
  • Avoid Highways: uses main and secondary roads instead of highways
  • Avoid Ferries: leaves ferry crossings out
  • Use Current Traffic: takes live traffic into account when working out the route
4

Optimise the stops

Click Optimize Pickups first, then Optimize Deliveries. worxTMS puts the stops in order using your settings. The Route box lists them in the new order and the map shows the numbered stops and the road route.
Prefer your own order? Click Reset, then click the Pickup and Dropoff cards on the left in the order the driver must do them.
5

Save

Check the order and the map, then click Save. The route is now used for the distances and price on the Costing tab, the stop numbers on the shipment card and map, the driver's stop list in the worxAPP and the waybills.

Why route optimisation pays

  • Less fuel and fewer kilometres: stops done in a sensible loop, not zig-zagging across town
  • Correct pricing: the empty legs from your depot to the first pickup and from the last drop back to base are counted, so you don't undercharge
  • Happier drivers: the stop order is set before they leave, on their phone
  • No extra software: route planning is built into every worxTMS plan, from Starter up

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to optimise a load with one pickup and one drop?
No. The route fills in by itself. Just click Save.

Does the route change the price?
Yes. The Costing tab uses the route distances: depot to pickup, pickup to last delivery, and last delivery back to base.

My pickup shows as x2.
Two stops collect from the same place, so they are combined into one pickup stop.

Driver's Current Location doesn't work.
The driver must be tracking. Check that the driver is logged in to the worxAPP with tracking switched on, or that the vehicle has a tracker.

Can I change the route after the load is active?
Yes. Open Edit Shipment, go to the Route page, click Reset and set the new order, then Save.

Can I optimise the route from my phone?
Yes. The Route page works the same on the phone. See Run your loads from your phone.

  • Single stop shipment: the full flow, from booking to invoice
  • Run your loads from your phone: book, route and dispatch on the go
  • Fuel and profit on a shipment: see what the route costs you in fuel
  • Cost per km: work out what your trucks really cost to run
✓ Your route is optimised
The stops are in order, the distance and price are right, and your driver has the route on his phone.
Smarter routes. Less fuel. More profit.
